frequently asked questions
Q: Did you always want to be a writer?
A: I wanted to be lots of different things growing up: a shoe sales clerk, a spy, a teacher, a detective, and a mad scientist. But “writer” was on that list too! All through school, I wrote stories, poems, novels, songs, comic strips, and neighborhood newspapers.
Q: Which one of your books is your favorite?
A: Each of my books has special meaning for me, but Not Enough Beds! was my first published book and has a special place in my heart. I still remember how thrilled I was!
Q: Do you make a lot of money?
A: Having a job as a writer is fun and satisfying, but it isn’t always a big money-maker! Many writers have other jobs too. Along with writing, I do lots of other things for my work, including teaching, editing, and helping other writers.
Q: How long does it take to write a book?
A:  Ideas often knock around in my head for months before I put them on paper. For some of my picture books, it might take only a few hours to actually get the first draft written. But then I often take months—and sometimes even years!—to revise.
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: I’ve always lived with pets, mostly cats and dogs. When I was a baby, my family’s cats used to share my crib. Right now I have one cat whose name is Mutzi—she is round and tailless and looks like a rabbit when she runs.
